Seven goal thriller? No such luck for the 64 hardy souls that braved a miserable night to watch this Herts Senior Cup tie.

Ware ensured they experienced no Top Field double-dip by beating the runaway Zamaretto Central Division leaders just two months after their FA Cup exit at the hands of the Canaries.

A sloppy evening, from Hitchin’s perspective, but by the end of the game, the sparse crowd was muttering “at least we can concentrate on the league without distraction.”
True, but manager Carl Williams wasn’t using that as an excuse.

Ware took the lead after 22 minutes, Matt Turpin sending a superb header past rYAN Haggerty from a free kick. Hitchin levelled 11 minutes later, Richard Howell running through and shooting past Ware keeper Obey Murefu from just inside the area.

Howell gave Hitchin the lead after 52 minutes when Luke Gregson laid the ball back and a relatively harmless shot was fumbled by Murefu before finding the net.

But then a three minute spell of madness undid Hitchin. In the 60th minute, Dean Gilbert  brought down the menacing Murat Karagul and Matt Mitchell scored from the penalty spot as the Hitchin skipper trudged off after receiving a red card.

Two minutes later, Ware regained the lead when Rob Kemble’s cross was followed into the net by Karagul.

Turpin added a fourth for Ware on 81 minutes to kill off the 10-man Canaries, and it was in added time that a combination of Liam George and a defender pulled a goal back.
