Hitchin demonstrated their resilence to come back from two-down at the interval to earn a point that keeps their unbeaten record intact – but only just!



At the interval, the Canaries looked certainties to lose their first game of the season, but once more, the self assurance and determination that has been their trademark this season came to the fore. This was a point saved, not two lost.

Hitchin lived very dangerously for most of the first half. As early as the first minute, Martin Bennett had to save from Chris Moore and it was no surprise when the same player opened the scoring after 14 minutes, a far post effort after a good cross by Craig Tomkins.

There was a further blow for Hitchin in the 20th minute when Andre Costa’s deflected shot found the back of the net to give Uxbridge a two goal cushion.

There may have been no way back for the Canaries if a 31st minute shot by Costa had bounced down from the bar and crossed the line, but this was a let-off for the home side.

The half-time team talk must have been interesting, but Hitchin came out far more positive in the second period. Hitchin had a succession of chances with Zak Burke, Dean Gilbert and a John Frendo shot that was tipped over by Michael Pinowski all going close.

With 17 minutes remaining, Frendo pulled a goal back, shooting in at the far post after a cross by Tom Pepper. Frendo and Luke Gregson both had opportunities that threatened to level the scores shortly afterwards.

But Hitchin did equalize in the 83rd minute, Burke sending a spectacular effort in from an acute angle, much to the relief of the 230 crowd.

The final stages saw Hitchin go in search of a winner, but Uxbridge held out. The run goes on, but this was a genuine scare for Carl Williams and his men….
