Hitchin Town 1 Hemel Hempstead Town 2

Tuesday, November 23 2010

Colin Payne returned to Top Field and came away with a 2-1 win in this Red Insure Cup second round tie. But it took an own goal in extra time for Hemel Hempstead to beat a weakened Canaries side.

On nights such as this, the last thing the crowd wanted was an extra 30 minutes in the numbing cold, but the two teams were evenly matched.

Hemel took the lead after 17 minutes, a near post header from Sonny French after a deft cross by David Stone. But Hitchin were level two minutes later, John Wordsworth side-footing a Carl Williams free kick into the net from six yards.

The second half began with a flurry of activity, and Hemel's star striker Dennis Fenemore almost scored when he sent the ball onto the roof of the net.

At the other end, Hitchin's young striker, Ryan Adam,  sent a left-foot shot against a post. Luke Gregson also went close to scoring with a long range effort and Ieuan Lewis went close when he cut inside and saw his shot saved by Hemel keeper Sean Thomas.

The game moved into extra time and although Hitchin had the upper hand in the early stages, they were unable to trouble the Hemel defence.

When a goal did come, it was an untidy own goal by Josh Cook following a corner. That was after 112 minutes and it was enough to end Hitchin's interest in cup competitions in 2010-11.
