Two superb goals from Liam George sent Hitchin through to the second round of the Red Insure Cup as the Canaries came from behind to beat local rivals Bedford 2-1.

What a pity only 122 people were present to see the goal that won this lively Red Insure Cup tie. Liam George, who has only flickered briefly on the Top Field stage, demonstrated such sublime skill in front of goal that it was hard to believe that this was a non-league game.

George's 69th minute winner belonged to a bigger occasion, a bit of trickery in a confined area before rolling the ball past Bedford keeper Ian Brown.

It gave Hitchin a win that looked unlikely in the first half. Bedford took a second minute lead when former Canary Josh Sozzo headed home at the near post.

For a while, Bedford looked the better side, with Aaran Cavill and Ian Draycott both going close. Hitchin, with their first choice strikers both rested, looked a little light up front.

After the interval, the Canaries stepped up a gear but it was not until the 65th minute that they levelled, George heading past Brown at the near post from a corner.

Then it was George's turn to light up a damp evening when he tricked the ball into the net from six yards.

Burke and George (again) had their opportunities to add to the scoreline, but Bedford almost took the game to extra time when Eddie Lawley scraped the crossbar from close range.

The draw for the next round is expected this week.
