Hitchin comfortably brushed aside the challenge of Ryman Premier side Harrow Borough in this friendly game, played before a crowd of 100, only marginally less than watched local league games played on the day.
The game demonstrated that the Canaries know how to play good football and also gave played like Brett Donnelly to show his worth. Indeed, Donnelly scored twice and made a claim for more regular inclusion in the first team.
But it was Jeff Hammond that opened the scoring for the Canaries, netting from the penalty spot after a handball incident in the third minute.
Donnelly got on the scoresheet in the 27th and 43rd minutes with two close range efforts. Hitchin led by three goals at the break and deserved to do so, but Harrow’s pacey forwards did cause problems for the Hitchin defence.
Richard Howell, back from injury, scored a spectacular goal in the 52nd minute to make it 4-0 and it wasn’t until late on that Harrow scored from the penalty spot through the exotically named Freedom Pigott.
