Hitchin’s weakened side crashed out of the Herts Charity Cup at the hands of Broxbourne Borough. Fixture congestion got the better of this tie, for out of the starting line-up, only Louis Lee could be considered a first team regular. The young Hitchin side were battered in the second half by a Broxbourne side that sensed the tie was theirs for the taking.
The visitors took the lead on 21 minutes when Mark Brennan scored from close range. It wasn’t until the second half that the Spartan South Midlanders took control, however. In the 57th minute, Fred Doolan increased Broxbourne’s lead with a long range shot, and nine minutes later, Murat Karagul took advantage of a defensive slip to make it 3-0.
Jon Munday netted from a free kick in the 75th minute to pull one back, but within a minute, Doolan scored again.
A minute from the end, Danny Ward made it five for Broxbourne.
