Something is coming together in Fishponds Road and it might just be a side capable of having a half decent season in the Zamaretto Midland Division.
Hitchin beat Ryman League Premier Boreham Wood in a lively and curiously competitive encounter that answered some of the question marks against the Canaries’ rapidly assembled side.
For the fourth consecutive game, Hitchin kept a clean sheet, underlining the value of new signings Mark Smith and Dean Gilbert. In midfield, Zak Burke and Steve Velandia both looked comfortable and up front, Jamie Arlick found the back of the net for the second time. Not a bad evening’s work for Carl Williams, who ran the team while Colin Payne enjoyed a family break.
The winning goal came after 19 minutes, Arlick showing some determination in firing home from just inside the penalty area. The Canaries almost had another goal when Curtis Ujah headed against his own post just before the interval.
The second half saw Boreham Wood come more into the game, but they had only one chance of menace, a shot by Dean Green that was blocked on the line by Danny Payne.
Hitchin: Bennett, Fontenelle (Grinham h/t), Murphy (Payne 60), Smith (Stanton 87), Gilbert, L.Donnelly, Lewis (Gutzmore 85), Velandia (Williams), Lee (Reece 70), Arlick ( B.Donnelly 60), Burke (Thompson 70)
