Hitchin’s interest in cup competitions came to an end at Bury, when the BGB Midlands Division side continued their impressive form in knockout games this season.

Darran Hay fielded new signing Joel Mason, recently joined after being released by Boreham Wood, and his first half performance indicated he could make a significant contribution in the weeks ahead.

For most of the opening 45 minutes, Hitchin looked the likelier side, but a goal five minutes from the break proved to be the turning point. Mason had a chance in the penalty area after being set up by Ieuan Lewis, but Bury Town keeper Marcus Garnham saved his shot.

In the 40^th minute, Bury scored, Sam Reed netting from close range with the Hitchin defence appealing for offside. It could have been two before the interval, but Canaries goalkeeper Luke Howard pulled off a good save.

Bury defender Lee Smith shot over in the early stages of the second half, but Hitchin’s defence was breached in the 69^th minute when Liam Barrett netted with a good finish for Bury’s second goal.

Hitchin attempted a recovery, but a free kick by Paul Barnes and a last minute shot from six yards by Liam McDevitt was all they could come up with.
