The Canaries came up against Conference South opposition in the form of St.Albans City and found the Saints just too strong.
Still without the absent David Deeney and long-term injury Martin Standen, Hitchin were again below strength. St.Albans, relegated from the National Conference last season, were always in command.
The Saints went ahead after 10 minutes when Junior Harvey headed past goalkeeper Martin Bennet. In the 32nd minute, the visitors extended their lead when Darren Spinks gave away a penalty and Hector Mackie scored from the spot.
Hitchin pulled a goal back on the stroke of half-time, Jon Stevenson scoring with a penalty after he was brought down in the area.
St.Albans scored again in the 64th minute, Chris Haslam netting from close range.
Hitchin had late chances through Ryan Frater and Glen Lamacraft, but the result was never in doubt.
