Hitchin's involvement in cup competitions for 2007-08 came to an end at Cheshunt in the Herts Charity Cup, thanks to a late goal.
Playing for the first time without talismanic central defender Ryan Frater, Hitchin reshuffled their resources, bringing in new signings Gordon Barr and Paul Donnelly, both previously with Arlesey Town.
It was another new man, James Edgerley, who looked impressive in the first half, and in the 25th minute, a free kick from the midfielder floated over veteran Cheshunt goalkeeper Brian Sealey and into the far corner of the net.
Former Hitchin midfielder David Hicks created Cheshunt's equaliser in the 35th minute, sending over a free-kick that landed nicely for Darrell Cox, who headed past Ricky Perks.
Edgerley went close again for Hitchin when he met a long pass but Sealey pushed his effort onto the woodwork. At the other end, however, Perks saved from Dewayne Clarke's fierce shot.
The tie looked to be heading for extra time when Hicks found Josh Cooper and his pass was met by Dean Fenton who shot into the net.
