Hitchin may have lost only their third league game of the season, but the manner in which they lost was more worrying for manager Darren Salton.
More injuries to add to the already long list of casualties and two red cards added to Hitchin’s woe at Twerton Park. With the big FA Cup tie at Clevedon looming, Salton clearly has selection problems in the week ahead.
As for the game, it was an instantly forgettable 90 minutes for Hitchin, a distinct anti-climax after the FA Cup heroics performed at Bognor Regis.
Hitchin failed to trouble Team Bath goalkeeper Darren Chitty all afternoon.
Team Bath had the better of the first half, and both Sean Canham and Joe Flurry went close. In the 17th minute, Gavin Jaggard limped off with an ankle injury, allowing Scott Orphanou to get another run-out. He had Hitchin’s only shot on goal in the first half, but it spun away from the target.
Seven minutes after the interval, Team Bath took the lead, Neil Saunders’ through ball finding Joe Flurry and he drove past debutant goalkeeper Robert Beckwith with ease.
Five minutes later, Hitchin should have fallen further behind but some bravery by defender Ryan Frater. Flurry rounded Beckwith a shot from an acute angle.
Frater raced back to cover and collided with the woodwork after clearing off the line. Frater, who has been in superb form recently, was stretchered off.
Team Bath missed another opportunity when Sean Canham struck the woodwork with an angled shot. Marc Canham also struck the woodwork with a lobbed effort.
In the final minute, Andy Ross was somewhat harshly sent off after getting entangled with Team Bath substitute Joe Arnold. Hitchin’s frustration continued until the final whistle and as the teams left the field, Mark Ducket was also shown a red card.
