Hitchin ended a three match losing streak by beating Rugby Town in a close game of few genuine chances.
Rugby had the better of the early minutes with David Stone weaving his way through but was topped in his patch by Hitchin goalkeeper Richard Wilmot.
But Hitchin took the lead after 10 minutes with a well taken first-time shot by Daniel French from a low ball inside from Josh Sozzo.
Thomas Hayes should have extended Hitchin's lead in the 18th minute when he was presented with a free shot on goal but saw his effort easily saved. And on the half hour, Stuart Hammonds struck the crossbar with a header. In the second period, James Ayres also hit the woodwork with a header from a corner.
Rugby's best chance fell to veteran striker Kevin Slinn 15 minutes from time with a near post header from a Danny Williams cross. The visitors continued to go in search of an equaliser and Wilmot had to be at his best to stop a Stone header from close range.
In the final seconds, Rugby's Andy Peaks almost scored in his own goal as he misplaced a header back to his own keeper.
