Former Hitchin striker Chris Dillon returned to his old club to win this scrappy local derby of a FA trophy tie.
Dillon scored both goals to break the hearts of his former team-mates in a game that failed to live up to expectations.
Bedford got off to an excellent start and scored after seven minutes. A bad back pass by Stuart Hammonds was seized upon by Dillon and he shot low past Wilmot.
Both sides hit the woodwork as the game settled down into a midfield struggle. Jason James hit Wilmot's right hand post and then Aaran Cavill sent a first time effort against the Bedford upright.
Hitchin levelled after 30 minutes when a Cavill cross was bundled home by recalled striker Wayne Mills.
The second half was an even affair, with Bedford having the best efforts, notably when Dillon saw his header saved by Wilmot.
The game looked set for a midweek replay until two minutes from the end, when Dillon received the ball from Andrew Phillips, spun and shot into the net.
