Tiverton Town 6 Hitchin Town 2

Saturday, December 10 2005

Hitchin crashed to their heaviest away defeat in a league game since 1998 when they were soundly thumped by in-form Tiverton at Ladysmead. Not since Bognor Regis beat the Canaries 6-1 in the Ryman Division One have the Canaries suffered such a humiliation.

But at half-time, things looked good for Darren Salton's men after they had retrieved a two-goal deficit juts before the interval. And when Richard Wilmot saved a penalty in the 47th minute, luck seemed to be on Hitchin's side.

Tiverton went ahead after 16 minutes when the Hitchin defence failed to clear the ball and Jamie Mudge shot home with ease. It was 2-0 on the half hour as former Luton player Kurt Nogan netted after the ball ricocheted around the Hitchin area.

Just as they did a week earlier against Bath, the Canaries then pulled off a dramatic recovery. In the 37th minute, an Aaran Cavill cross-cum-shot was deflected into the net by Tiverton defender Steve Winter.

This unexpected boost was soon followed  by another goal, this time from Josh Sozzo, who volleyed home a cross by Thomas Hayes to score his eighth goal in 10 games. As the half ended it was Hitchin that looked the more likely winners.

But Tiverton came out with renewed energy and they spurned the chance of taking the lead when Wilmot stopped Steve Winter's penalty kick.

The let-off was only temporary, however, for Tiverton went into overdrive and Mudge put them ahead after 57 minutes. Hitchin could have levelled soon after, but Stuart Hammonds' free header was wide of the target.

In the 69th minute, Hitchin's defence was found wanting as Chris Holloway swept the ball past Wilmot from a Chris Bale cross. Six minutes later, the two players combined again for an almost identical goal as Hitchin started to collapse. It was no surprise when Mudge grabbed his hat-trick in the 77th minute.
