The Canaries may have ended goalless for the third time in four games, but this latest draw, against a side that almost won promotion to the National Conference last season, was a creditable result.
Hitchin looked solid at the back and busy in midfield against former Hitchin favourite Gary Roberts’ team. Cambridge City struck the woodwork twice and on reflection should have won the game, but the work-rate from Darren Salton’s men more than matched the visitors.
David Sadler had two chances in the first half for Cambridge City, once when he headed against the bar and another which was saved by Steven Graham in the Hitchin goal.
Hitchin's new signing, Tommy Hayes, had a good chance towards the end of the first half, shooting into the side-netting. Hayes went close again in the second period, shooting wide from Aaron Cavill’s cross.
Shane Tolley hit the post with a curling shot with substitute keeper Martin Patching beaten, and Sadler was later denied by a brave save from Patching. Tolley also saw a shot pushed away by the former Arlesey man.
