Hitchin Town 1 Luton Town 4

Wednesday, July 21 2004

Almost 800 people turned out to pay tribute to Ian Scott, the long-serving Hitchin midfielder.

The game itself was secondary, what was important was that so many people were moved to acknowledge the contribution made by the popular Scott, who started his professional career with Luton.

Hitchin actually took the lead against their illustrious visitors, in the 31st minute when Darran Hay netted a rebound after Ricky Case's shot was parried.

But a firm header by the sought-after Steve Howard levelled the scores after 35 minutes.

The crowd were treated to the sight of former Luton and England midfielder Ricky Hill taking the field in the second half for Hitchin, and, with his son Shane playing for Hitchin at the same time it created a near unique situation, father and son playing for the same team.

Luton took the lead in the 69th minute through Ian Hillier and added further goals through Enoch Showumni (71 mins) and David Bayliss (74 mins).

There was an added bonus for Hitchin fans that arrived early in the form of a reunion of many of the players who appeared in the Canaries' 1995 FA Cup giant-killing team.
