Hitchin Town were drawn away this weekend to last season's Herts Divison Champions and League Challenge Cup finalists, Hillingdon Borough.
Having played this side last season and failed to take any points, Hitchin Town were fully aware of the type of football Hillingdon play and were looking forward to a great game with some great football.
From the whistle, both teams competed well considering the early dew on the ground, with good play and sportsmanship but after Hillingdon had a half hearted attempt at goal James Holland saw the ball slide through his fingers. 1-0
This was not the start Hitchin were looking for, but as the game was re-started Hitchin stood up the mark and the midfield of Lee Neale, Bryn Reynolds, Kyle Ronald and Josh Smith worked their socks off. Hitchin seemed to gain the upper hand and linked up well with the forwards of Sean Herr and Ryan Ellingham.
The defence of George Higley, Lewis Holmes, Dean Hardware and Matt Morley (C) were strong and composed at any further attacks. They communicated well with the midfield and as the game progressed Hitchin looked the stronger side. As the game drew towards the half time whistle Hitchin took their chance to grab an equaliser from Ryan Ellingham. 1-1. Hitchin then seemed to gain more confidence and had a few chances go begging before Lee Neale smashed the ball into the back of the net to take the lead. 1-2. Hillingdon, as we all know, never give up and came back at us quickly to bring the scoreline level. 2-2.
The second half saw a few subs bought on by both teams. Alex Coppin came onto the field of play for Hitchin in a midfield position. Hitchin defence of Matt Morley (C), George Higley, Lewis Holmes and Dean Hardware worked extremely hard and fought off any further attacks from the home side. Lee Neale then found himself yet again in front of goal and placed the ball into the back of the net to take the lead. 2-3.
With only 25 mins left of this exciting game, Hillingdon found themselves in a predicament having used all their subs, their left back fell awkwardly dislocating his shoulder. This left Hillingdon down to 10 men and Hitchin Town took control.
Sean Herr added another goal to the visitors tally and with only 3 minutes until full time Matt Morley (C) came from his defensive position to head the ball into the back of the net. Final Score 2-5. This is yet again another well deserved 3 points to keep us at the top of the league.
A great game to watch, our best wishes go out to the Hillingdon Borough left back, we hope you get back to full fitness soon...you should be very proud of how you played.
