MATT NOLAN, who has been the subject of transfer speculation throughout the summer months, looks to be staying at Hitchin and judging by his pre-season performances, he is out to prove the likes of Peterborough and Chesterfield wrong.
Nolan has been in good form and appears to be fired up for the new season after trialling with the two Second Division clubs. After an unexplainable loss of form last season, the Canaries young striker knows that he needs a good campaign this time around.
Kerry Dixon, Hitchin's Assistant Manager, and one of the leading goalscorers in the 1980s, knows a good front man when he sees one. He was pleased to hear that Nolan looks set to start the season with the club. "I'm delighted that both Matt and Dean Brennan are still with Hitchin, their presence will make us a stronger side," he said.
Dixon sees the opening half dozen games as crucial to Hitchin's season. "We need to win a couple of the and avoid defeat as much as possible. We don't want to be playing 'catch-up' after a bad start," he insisted.
He has no complaints about the fitness levels of the players, but he was disappointed at the first team's recent defeat at Dunstable. "We must avoid taking the field with an attitude of complacency. It is naive to expect teams from a lower level to stand aside and let us play. This is the sort of attitude that gets you knocked out of the FA Cup and Trophy," he said.
Dixon's work commitments meant he was in Slovakia in midweek with Chelsea, showing that he won't be at every Hitchin game, but he will lead the team into action on Tuesday at Billericay.
