Hitchin's players are shaping up nicely for their opening pre-season friendly against a Tottenham XI at Top Field on Saturday, says manager Kerry Dixon.
The former Chelsea and England striker has been impressed with the hard work being put in by his players, in particular some of those eager to claim a first team place next season.
Gavin Jaggard, Kevin Evans, Glen Lamacraft and Mark Bridge have been singled out for their efforts so far, with trialist Gordon Barr also impressing Dixon. "These lads have done very well, Jaggs is keen to impress this season and it's good to see that Bridgey has recovered well from his operation," said Dixon. Josh Sozzo is also fired up after his holiday and the Canaries still await the returning Stuart Maynard and Paul Covington.
Dixon is also running his eye over two young players from Bishop's Stortford, both of whom have done well in a handful of sessions. "These lads have looked good and we will be watching them closely to see how they get on with us. These are early days, but I have been pleased with what I've seen so far."
Looking ahead to the new season, Dixon admits that Hitchin are going into the unknown to some extent. "We don't know what this league is going to be like and it won't be until six to 10 games until we are able to see how strong our squad is and where it needs reinforcing," he commented.
