"What a lovely win," says Dixon

Hitchin manager Kerry Dixon was beaming after his side had confounded the critics and opened the season with a victory against the Southern League title favourites.

"What a lovely win, but we shouldn’t get carried away - we’ve a long way to go," he said. "But we’ve come up against one of the better sides and we’ve got three points on the board - I couldn’t be happier."

The Canaries’ win does pose a question - have people been underestimating Hitchin’s potential or is the Southern League weaker than first thought? "We’re up against sides who didn’t qualify for the cut," says Dixon. "So we are possibly at a level where we have more time to develop our side. We won’t really know for a few weeks, so I am not getting over-excited about one win."

Dixon is enthused, however, at the spirit in the camp and the competition for places. "Everyone wants to be involved at the moment, and look at today - Bridgey has come on as sub and scored the winner - he was desperate to be playing a part and he did."

He is also satisfied with the fitness level of his squad after pre-season. "We won’t be lacking for work-rate or effort," he insists.
