"We may surprise some people,"says Dixon

Hitchin are looking to consolidate in the Southern League Premier division this season but according to manager Kerry Dixon, "may surprise one or two people."

Dixon was speaking on the eve of the new season about his team’s prospects. "I am happy with the squad we have assembled within our budgetary limits. A few weeks ago, rumours abounded that this player was leaving, that player has had a better offer, but we have lost only a few, most of whom were squad players."

One of those players, Stuart Maynard, was rumoured to be on his way to Hemel Hempstead, but late last week, the Canaries player of the year for last season was back at Top Field. "It’s good to have him back, but I am equally pleased with new players like Gordon Barr and James Kidd."

Dixon is looking for Hitchin to find their feet in their new league. "This is going to be a tough league, but I think we can hold our own but just as many of the teams are an unknown quantity, so too are we to them."

Hitchin go into Saturday’s game with Hednesford with a handful of players suspended, injured or away on holiday. Goalkeeper Richard Wilmot and defender Mark Burke are both away, Glen Lamacraft is suspended, and Paul Covington is struggling for full fitness.
