Two home games in the next week give Hitchin a chance to get to grips with their Southern League programme.
Both Grantham and Chippenham finished last season in the bottom two places in the Premier. But while Grantham have been slow to get off the mark, Chippenham, who visit Hitchin next Saturday, have come out all guns blazing, notching up maximum points from their first two games.
Chippenham's manager, Steve White is no stranger to Top Field. He scored for Hereford United in their 4-2 defeat at Hitchin in the FA Cup, a game that marked the Canaries' first FA Cup giant-killing achievement. "It wasn't one of the highlights of my career," said White, who scored well over 200 Football League goals in a 21-year stint in the professional game.
Like Hitchin, Chippenham have had to deal with financial restrictions. "Our budget was cut in half," said White. "Now I have a young side who want to play for Chippenham. Those that stayed from last season demonstrated their commitment."
With a 100% record after two games, White has had to urge caution amongst the Bluebirds' fans. "As far as I know, nobody has won the title in August," he insisted.
Grantham, the team from Margaret Thatcher country, come to Hitchin on Tuesday August 24, kick off 7.45pm. For some reason, they are known as the Gingerbreads!
