Hitchin Town finished in their highest position since joining the Southern League in 2004.
The Canaries ended up in 11th place, a position that few would not have predicted during the dark days of February and March when Hitchin suffered a string of morale-damaging defeats. But Hitchin ended the season in an upbeat mood with four wins in five games, their best ending for five years.
Top Field gates were slightly up at the end of the season, the club’s average of 300 around 2.7% ahead of last season. There was not big bank holiday gate for the Canaries, however, as no big local derby was on the fixture list. Next season, Bedford may provide attractive opposition for Christmas and Easter.
Hitchin used 39 players during the 2006-07 season, with David Deeney playing more games - 53 in league and cup - than any other player. Deeney became the first player since Ian Scott in 1995-96 to play in all Hitchin’s league games. Chris Dillon, who left the club in March to join Histon, ended the season as top scorer with 18 goals in all competitions.
