Hitchin travel to last season’s Southern League champions, Salisbury to play for the Southern League Championship Shield, and manager Darren Salton is desperate for the Canaries to pick up some more silverware.
Salisbury, who will play in Conference South this coming season, beat Hitchin 3-0 in both meetings last season. But the Canaries won many friends in the two games and their manager, Nick Holmes, tipped Hitchin to do well in 2006-07.
“This is a big game for us and a huge test to see how far we’ve come,” says Salton. “Salisbury will be one week away from their first league game, so they will be fielding a strong team.”
Salton was pleased with the way his team performed against a young Crystal Palace side last Saturday. “We played some good football and there were a lot of positives from the game, particularly in midfield.”
Salton is likely to field a injury-hit side at Salisbury, however. Both Chris Dillon and Gavin Jaggard are doubtful for the game and Neil Pugh is also struggling.
