Hitchin Town may go top of the BGB Southern League for the first time if they beat Gloucester at Top Field tomorrow.
But manager Darren Salton is taking a cautious approach to the game, aware of Gloucester's capabilities. Gloucester won at Kings Lynn on Tuesday, which was a massive result for them. That ended a poor run for them so their confidence has been restored.
Gloucester had a good second half of 2005-06 and many people predicted them to make a challenge near the top of the table. But Tim Harris's side have failed to live up to expectations, hampered by a string of injuries to key men.
Hitchin are still awaiting their first win against the Tigers. Three of the two clubs five meetings have ended in a draw.
The Canaries' spirit is high, however, after two wins in the past week. Victories against Bath and Maidenhead have compensated for the recent second half collapse at the hands of Tiverton. "We have shown great character, especially in midweek when we came from behind," Salton said. "But we have a job to do against Gloucester if we want to hit the top spot."
