Home record improves but gates still fall

A final placing of 14th and some major silverware were the highlights for Hitchin as they made progress in their second Southern League season.
The Canaries moved up from 18th in 2004-05 on the back of their best home record since 1999-00, although their away record was the worst since that same season.
Josh Sozzo netted 31 goals during the season, the most since Shaun Marshall’s 43 in the 1994-95 campaign. Sozzo has now scored 50 goals in 87 appearances for the Canaries.
Richard Wilmot was ever present during the season and he also passed 200 games for the club, dating back 20 years.
Attendances at Top Field were down once more - the average of 292 was 13% lower than last season and the smallest since 1989. In different home form in previous years and some disappointing gates for big games against Bedford and
Kings Lynn were contributory factors in the average dropping to sub-300 level.
As well as the Errea Cup, Hitchin also enjoyed a better season in the FA Cup, reaching the third qualifying round, and also went one round in the FA Trophy - a marked improvement on 2004-05 when for the first time in the club’s history, it failed to win a single cup game.
