Goal-shy Grantham next for Hitchin

Hitchin manager Darren Salton is hoping for a quick rebound after last week’s defeat at Evesham when his team take on Grantham this weekend.

Salton’s men put in a tame performance against relegation-threatened Evesham, all the more disappointing because of recent good results against teams near the top of the table. “It was an off day all round,” he said. “We just didn’t get going.”

Grantham are among the lowest goalscorers in the Southern League, but their defence is also one of the meanest. Last Saturday, they lost at home to Cirencester, their first home defeat in 11 games. They have won just twice in eight games. Hitchin have not won a league game at home since January 7 when they beat Halesowen 1-0 and have not secured three points since winning at Merthyr Tydfil on February 18.

Hitchin have yet to beat Grantham in the league, and last season lost twice to the Lincolnshire side. Earlier this season, the Canaries drew 1-1 at Grantham.

The Gingerbreads, managed by former Nottingham Forest player Lee Glover, have dropped from a top three place earlier in the campaign to mid-table.

Hitchin have a full strength squad to call on.
