Hitchin are hoping to repay Merthyr Tydfil for the 5-1 defeat they suffered at the beginning of January, a result that triggered off the current dismal run that has all but wrecked the Canaries' season.
Hitchin were beaten 2-0 at Hemel on Tuesday night as Merthyr were being thrashed 4-0 by Bath. Merthyr still harbour slim hopes of a play-off place, but that goal is gradually slipping away from the Welshmen. Both Hitchin and Merthyr could get relegated, although it is looking increasingly likely that a low points total will be reached by the current bottom five.
Canaries manager Darren Salton remains optimistic that his team can turn the corner. “We played a lot better at Hemel and there was a lot of spirit about our performance. It was certainly an improvement on last Saturday.”
Hitchin have yet to beat Merthyr at Top Field, the Martyrs have won there on each of their two visits.
