Experience and calm nerves needed, says Hay

Hitchin Town go into the New Year's Day clash with Cheshunt with manager Darran Hay calling for cool heads as the Canaries enter the new year embroiled in a relegation fight.

Hitchin (21st) and Cheshunt (22nd) are at the foot of the BGB Premier table and have beaten each other already this season. Hay is looking for his team to keep their nerve in what is a clear six-pointer. “We desperately need some experience on the pitch to calm things down. Against Halesowen we did well for 45 minutes but once they scored, our heads dropped and we were up against it again.”

Hay promises more changes as he looks to strengthen his team. “We need to bolster all departments and in the next week or so there will be more players arriving,” he said. “We need some experience and players that can rise above the level we are at.”

Cheshunt are also in turmoil and have not won for seven games. They are also without  a manager although they are close to naming a replacement for Tom Loizou who left some weeks ago.

Hay is aware that Hitchin are now nine points from safety and that a gap has developed. “The games in hand mean nothing when you are not winning. We know we have a big job on our hands and we have to start picking up points soon. Hopefully, with the extra quality we are looking to add, we can start to chip away at that deficit.”
