Preview: Soham Town v Hitchin Town

Hitchin travel to Soham on Bank Holiday Monday, aiming to put the record straight. Last season, the Canaries were beaten twice by Soham – results that arguably cost the club promotion.

Due a win?
Soham beat us home and away – including a disaster of a game in December in which the Canaries threw away a two-goal lead to lose 3-2. Then later in the season, Hitchin lost 1-2 at home to the Cambridgeshire side. So yes, we are due a win against Soham.

How are they faring this season?
Not too good so far. Soham were beaten 2-1 at S&L Corby in the FA Cup on Saturday – something of a surprise result. In the league, they have just one point, a 2-2 draw with Uxbridge on the opening day of the season and two 1-0 defeats at Barton and Marlow. However, the margin of defeat has been narrow and against Uxbridge saw them come from 2-0 down. So, the league table may be misleading.

Who have we got to watch out for?
Dubi Ogbonna was top scorer last season and highly rated by some. But he was on the bench on Saturday at Corby. Goalscorer against S&L was Tom Benjamin, manager Ian’s son. Deakin Napier, who joined the club in the summer, is a tricky winger who has pace and could be a menace.

How to get there
Take the turning off the A14 for Soham/Ely. Join the A142 following signs for Ely/Soham. On approaching Soham at the Q8 petrol station, continue down the Soham bypass for approximately 1½ miles. Turn left after the Bypass Motel, continue bearing left across the Common into Bushel Lane. At the end of the road turn right into Hall Street. Julius Martin Lane is second left.
