Hitchin manager Carl Williams is looking for greater consistency from his side after what he called a “flat performance” against Ware.
Williams, who appeared briefly for the first time in the first team when he came on as substitute against the Ryman League Division One side, could not explain the gulf in the level of performance between the Slough game a week ago and Ware.
“We went from a high level to a relatively poor display..we did not really get going Our passing was poor and the tempo just wasn’t there. But if we can get results when we play like this, it can’t be all bad,” said Williams.
“We need characters on the pitch, and with myself and Mark [Smith] on the sidelines, we were lacking leaders. That’s why I came on – I may be a little lacking in match fitness, but you may see more of me in the coming weeks,” he added.
Williams was not surprised by Ware’s determined approach. “We had reports on them, so we knew they would rely on counter-attacking. It was not an easy game, but we created enough chances to win it and I am glad we got through.”
