Hitchin visit one of their "bogey grounds" when they travel to fifth placed Chesham United on Saturday in what should be a compelling contest.
The Canaries have won just three times at Chesham, the last time in 1993, and have not beaten the Bucks side in 14 games. The last time Hitchin beat the Generals was in 1995, a 4-3 victory at Top Field.
Chesham won at Slough in midweek, racing into a three-goal first half lead before eventually winning 3-1. Last Saturday, however, they were beaten at Leighton. Hitchin’s only home defeat of the season came at the hands of Andy Leese’s side in September. That last minute defeat – Steve Obeng netted with almost the last kick of the game – still rankles with Hitchin’s fans and management.
Although Chesham lost star striker Leon Archer to injury, they filled his boots with former Ware striker John Frendo and the centre forward has scored in each of his first two games.
Colin Payne has the highest regard for Chesham. “I still see them as the best side we have played this season. They have a very good squad, with some excellent players. I haven’t seen better opponents and they will be challenging right until the end of the season.”
Payne believes the clash at the Meadow will be a thrilling encounter. “We have two of the best sides on a good pitch and in front of a big crowd. I think we are in for an exciting afternoon.”
Mark Smith returns for Hitchin and the Canaries should be at full strength.
