Shefford Saints U10 v Hitchin Hawks U10

Friday, May 1 2009

A Friday evening kick-off saw both teams travel to Shefford.

It was Shefford who started the strongest with some early pressure and the Hawks had to be at their best to defend - they were. It took a while for Hawks to settle down and get hold of the ball but when they did their passing was back to its best. Ryan C was very cool under pressure and between him, Sahosh and Tyler, they started to combine very well. Openings began to come Hawks way, a throw in with a neat lay off from Alex and a shot from Ben was deflected for a corner, which was defended well by Shefford. The only threat from Shefford came from long shots, which didn’t pose a threat to Ryan D in goal. Finally the breakthrough came when Ryan C passed to Tyler, who passed to Ben and his pass to the other wing was collected by George on the touchline. He turned inside his marker, looked up and from well outside the area placed his shot across the keeper and into the top corner of the goal (0-1). More attacking by Hawks sent Alex through on goal but he hesitated and turned back inside only to be pounced on by 2 defenders. Then, a corner from Tyler caused confusion in the box and was only cleared as far as Ryan C. His shot from outside the area just went past the post.

Shefford kicked off the 2nd half but it was Hawks that came out the strongest, winning the ball back and forcing an early corner, which was cleared by Shefford. Goal kicks from Shefford were pumped long into Hawks half but Sahosh and Ryan C were there to defend well and pass the ball forward. An excellent move led to Hawks 2nd goal. Sahosh took a quick throw in from inside his own half, which was flicked on by George to Alex. He neatly passed the ball inside to Ben who powered into the penalty area and coolly slotted the ball past the keeper and into the far corner of the goal (0-2). More neat passing from the Hawks saw a Ben shot go just wide and a high cross from Tyler into the area eluded the goal keeper but was just a fraction too high for George to get his head on and the effort went wide. The odd attack from Shefford was snuffed out by the Ryan and Sahosh and mainly led to long shots, which went wide, or Ryan D saved comfortably. The Hawks saw the match out with a corner from Tyler and Ben’s shot went just wide.

An excellent performance from the Hawks who made angles and passed the ball to each other superbly. They should be really pleased with themselves on a fine win.

Result: Shefford Saints 0 Hitchin Hawks 2

Hawks: Ryan D, Ryan C, Sahosh, George, Ben, Tyler, Alex
