The start of a new year for the Hitchin Hawks and Harriers and the weather had not improved from the end of the previous month. It was a bitterly cold day but at least it didn’t rain.
As usual, first up were the Hawks and they made a promising start by dominating a lot of the play early on in the first half. In the 2nd minute a rocket corner by Tyler was picked up by George whose shot trickled across the goal mouth. Some good midfield passing between Oliver and Tyler finally resulted in a pass forward to Ben whose shot was just wide of the right post. Bassingbourn began to settle in as time went on and had some good possession. Another Tyler corner landed well for Tom whose shot was just over the bar. The best chance of the half came for Tyler, having run through the Bassingbourn defence he had just the keeper to beat. Unfortunately the keeper was up to the job and made a brave save at Tyler’s feet. Another Tyler corner found George’s head but the header was just wide of the right post.
There was some additional entertainment as a Bassingbourn player decided to take a corner using the corner flag as opposed to the ball (ouch!). A Bassingbourn run down the right wing just before half time resulted in a pass forward to a Bassingbourn striker who slotted the ball passed the keeper to make it [0-1].
The second half started with Bassingbourn coming out strong, an early Bassingbourn shot in the first minute forcing a quality save from Ali. The Hawks responded pushing forward once again, George had a shot from distance that was caught by the keeper.
There followed a sustained period of pressure from the Hawks but they seemed unable to capitalise on their possession as Bassingbourn defended brilliantly.
Ben made a darting run through the Bassingbourn defence and only had the keeper to beat but unfortunately his shot was saved by the keeper.
At this point in the game Bassingbourn seemed to step up a gear and played some quality passing football through midfield leading to their second goal of the match [0-2]. They then continued to keep the pressure on the Hawks and their superior passing eventually gave them another opportunity which they took to make it [0-3].
A controversial Bassingbourn throw resulted in the 4th and final goal, the throw was a clear 6 inches out but was not spotted by the referee. Given the score however it was academic [0-4].
It was quite an entertaining game given the result and Bassingbourn had clearly improved since last time we played them.
