Hitchin Town Youth U14 v Stevenage Colts U14

Sunday, January 6 2008

A lovely sunny morning greeted us all to the first game of the New Year and we wondered, could the boys stretch their fine unbeaten record to seven?. Against a team we had never faced in our 5 years ,the answer would not be known until the final blow of the exceptional referees whistle!.

We were up against a couple of factors today, rustiness and an under 14 goalkeeper who had a kick like Paul Robinson. Although Hitchin were carrying out the main threat with lots of efforts on goal, some not always on target, and, when they were, this new phenomena was equal to the shots.

This GK put our back four and Harry under a new kind of pressure with his kicks reaching our box first bounce and we had to be at our best to cope. The two full backs of Lewis & Jack again were excellent ably supported by James & Mickey and Harry dealt with all but one shot which he tells me was off side!.

Hitchin always took the game to Stevenage and deservedly took the lead after good work by Olly & James releasing Billy who is looking more and more comfortable each game on the right side of midfield finishing first time with a low drive that the keeper struggled to keep out. It wasn’t long to wait for another delightful goal from Ben who two mins earlier had tried to lob the keeper when one on one only to see the keeper parry to safety. He wasn’t about to give the keeper the same chance and with a brilliant feint tucked it into the far corner.

Fair play to Stevenage they rallied and encouraged by their coaches and supporters replied with time running out in the first half. The boys new they had switched off and needed to get back to good habits in the second half. HT 2-1

Stevenage started the brighter second half and the game became more even although it was Hitchin creating the clearer chances led by the ever improving Olly who is now dominating games, he has added steel and upped his tempo to his game this season and really is looking a class act all over the park.
There were no more goals in the second half and the boys had won without playing at all to their potential. What a great sign!

Thanks to all at Stevenage for a very sporting game.

Hopefully the rust has been polished off and the boys will get back to their flowing passing game next week and maintain this excellent record.

Boys you must listen to Mike & Mark at training and apply what is being taught into Sundays games. Simple pass and move, pass the way your facing, support each other, cover each other, TALK to each other it was very quiet on Sunday.

All this after another victory well done boys keep up the effort and team play and who knows what will you can achieve at the end of the season.

Final Score: Hitchin 2-1 Stevenage Colts

Scorers: Billy, Ben

MOM Olly
