Potton Colts U11 v Hitchin Town U11

Sunday, April 20 2008

Hitchin became champions of The Royston Crow League Division Two with this fine performance away to Potton.

Despite not having played for six weeks, the young canaries looked sharp and played neat, attacking football throughout. They knew a win was important, as Sawbridgeworth had moved to the top of the table during their break.

Potton held off the waves of attack for 10 minutes, but once Liam Sweeny had broken down the right to score with a neat finish, the result was never in doubt. Liam scored a second with the best move of the match, after good link-up play started from the back by Alfie Dinsey, with Jake Alderson, Michael WIlliams and Kameron Bethell all involved.

Potton's keeper played well and made several fine saves, but further goals came before half-time - Jake's classy header from an excellent Christian Farrugia corner and Rhys Dainton blasting home after a shot by Sam Ward had been parried.

In the second half Rhys scored twice more to secure his hat-trick, Kameron made sure after a save from Jake and Liam then completed his own hat-trick. Potton gained a deserved consolation to the delight of the home fans late on, but Simmy's goal just before Jake Holbrook made it 10 surely caused the biggest celebration of the day.

With Simmy having been pushed up front and firing home, that means every single player in Barry Alderson and Patrick Sweeney's squad has now scored this season.

Hitchin Under-11s have won the league with three games to spare and an astonishing goal difference of +102 so far. They have conceded only eight goals all season and won 15 out of 17 league matches so far.

No one knew the championship had been won until after Monday morning's news that Sawbridgeworth had unexpectedly lost, so celebrations are on hold until after next week's home game against Stevenage Celtic.

Result: Potton Colts 1 Hitchin Town 10
