Not the best performance of the season by a long way, but this win took Hitchin eight points clear at the top of Royston Crow Division Two.
Played on a hard uneven surface at Purwell amidst high winds and vociferous away support, this was a fairly bruising encounter against a decent Hatfield side.
There was little between the two teams for the first 10 minutes, with Hatfield setting their stall out to work hard and challenge well. But eventually a Canaries (in blue bibs) attack saw the ball break to Christian Farrugia on the left, just inside the penalty area. He looped in a great effort for one nil.

Hatfield pressure followed, with a well struck corner causing panic and a good chance blasted over the bar a minute later. But Hitchin went two up when Kameron Bethell tapped in from a scramble after a good Lee Caller corner.
In the second half, play remained patchy at best. Hatfield worked hard but eventually tired and their high defensive line gave plenty of chance for Hitchin's pacey forwards to make the most of.
Kameron notched a third to put the result beyond doubt and then strikes by Kameron again and Liam Sweeney added a slightly flattering end to the final score.
Hitchin goalie Luke gained man-of-the-match for a fine penalty save at the very end.
