Bishops Stortford U9 v Hitchin Hawks U9

Saturday, March 29 2008

As the cloud came over the first game got underway, the Hawks started confidently and quickly got into their stride. There was a period of fluid play from the Hawks as a nice through ball from Tyler found Ben on the edge of the Box whose shot was just over the bar. Later a Hawks corner from Tyler was laid back to Ben on the left wing and his pin point shot went straight in the top right corner of the goal giving the keeper no chance [1-0].

Another Hawks corner taken by Tyler was perfectly waited into the area and Juan got a head to it but the ball was deflected off the keeper. Tyler managed to steal the ball in midfield and had a long shot that was just wide of the left post. Bishops Stortford finally settled into the game and a strong attack from them forced a save from Ali. The Hawks continued to dominate the first half and just before half time an excellent shot from Ben in midfield found the left corner of the net to make it [2-0].

As the second half got underway the Bishops Stortford half time managers chat had obviously had an impact as Bishops Stortford seemed much more focused and determined. Early pressure from Bishops Stortford resulted in a goal mouth scramble but they failed to capitalise on the opportunity and the ball was eventually cleared. Bishops Stortford created another couple of chances following this but they just couldn’t get that finishing shot, though I think the Hawks defence played a significant part in this with some excellent clearance work at the back. A lapse of concentration by Olly nearly ended in disaster as a through pass was picked up by Bishops Stortford but the resulting shot deflected off the right post. A strong run by Ben through the midfield put Bishops Stortford on the back foot but he was eventually overwhelmed by numbers.

In the latter part of the half Bishops Stortford dominated more of the play creating numerous chances. A perfectly struck corner forced Ali to make a save tipping the ball over the bar. Another corner again required Ali to stop the resulting shot on goal. As the second half came to a conclusion, Bishops Stortford had one more chance but the shot was just wide of the left post.

It was a very good performance from the Hawks, but Bishops Stortford were unlucky not to at least get a consolation goal.
