A real top of the table clash today against high scoring Biggleswade, with good football weather and an excellent neutral referee all was set.The boys arrived in relaxed mood, plenty of confidence and a steely determination to pit their wits against what was to prove a very physical team with some extremely large 14 year olds.
The game started at a very fast pace with both teams determined in the tackle and trying to establish dominance. Biggleswade rather fortunately went ahead when a ricochet clearance fell to their striker who finished past Harry in goal. 0-1
Mike encouraged the boys to keep the ball down and play football. This they did as the match ebbed and flowed and it was Hitchin who were now applying the main pressure and it was a tremendous strike from Olly that got these young Canaries level. 1-1 This gave the boys a huge lift and they extended the lead when after showing great determination Ben was fouled in the box as he was about to pull the trigger and the neutral ref had no doubts in awarding the penalty.
Ben dusted himself down and after delaying tactics which were totally unnecessary by Biggleswade slotted the ball with ease past the keeper. Biggleswade were truly rattled but responded in fine style when straight from the kick off a huge punt from their own half flew over Harry and into the back of the net. 2-2.
More chances were created by both sides in what was turning out to be a great game against the divisions top two sides and it was Biggleswade who took one of theirs after Harry had taken the correct option to steer the on rushing striker sideways away from goal he managed to cross it over and unfortunately for Hitchin the ball was headed in at the near post as the defence tried to clear. 2-3 Half –Time
The boys were given a huge roar as they came off at half time because as parents we knew they had matched a very strong opposition but stayed disciplined and respectful to opposition and referee alike.
As the second half started the comment was made that there were more goals to come in this game and they were right and after making at least four outstanding match saving dives Harry and the Hitchin defence were out done and Biggleswade deservedly extended their lead 2-4.
But this Hitchin team is made up of fine pedigree fighting stock and was determined not to fold. They continued to stay disciplined and kept focused with fantastic determination shown by Billy & Ben between them allowing Ben to squeeze a third goal in for Hitchin. 3-4
Hitchin were battling all the way to get the equaliser but time ran out as a nervy Biggleswade managed to hang on a as the ref blew her final whistle.
The boys came off to a standing ovation Harry,Dan ,James, Mickey, Tom, Lewis, Jack, Olly, Richard, Ben, Sam, Billy, Josh & Dale, we are all so proud of you what a fantastic performance well done a credit to us your parents and Hitchin Town Youth Football Club!.
