Back at Sunny Purwell today after 5 away trips and the big chance to go top of the league for the first time in their 6 years together.
Well what a start with only 70 seconds gone on the referee’s watch Sam finished off a heavy bout of pressure and tucked the ball into the corner of the net.
This very able BS Rangers team responded with a never say die attitude and were well led by the big No. 3 at the centre of defence and yet again another busy keeper. But it was Hitchin who were not exactly firing on all cylinders that after 30 mins got their second when Richard latched on to a through ball from Olly and just got ahead of the advancing keeper and whipped it into an empty net.
Rangers still made a fight of this game and although it became quite scrappy in truth the Hitchin defence led by the example of Captain James, Lewis , Danny & Jack with Harry in goal were very rarely troubled, except for one break through when Harry pulled off a fine save to keep the score line 2-0 at half time. The midfield of Richard, Mickey, Tom & Olly kept their shape and did all that was asked by Mike in covering every blade of grass and feeding the ever hungry Sam & Ben up front.
Another opportunity was given to Billy, Dale and Josh to stake a claim for a starting place in the more difficult games coming up. The game was a midfield battle with not much happening in the way of chances, but with Ben back on the pitch after having a rest when the opportunity arises he normally finishes off and with style lobbing over the keeper having brushed off the last defender.
3-0 and lots of changes but still Rangers kept fighting to their credit but it was all Hitchin as far as chances were concerned. The pick of the best was a long range free kick from Olly which was met perfectly by James who then saw his header crash against the bar with the keeper well beaten.
Olly who had been dominant again all day with the ball like a magnet to his head got his own personal reward collecting the ball on the edge of the box shaking off lots of tackles and firing past the keeper and bursting the net.
Final score 4-0 and quite rightly the boys have every right to crow WE ARE TOP of the LEAGUE! , say WE ARE TOP of the LEAGUE!
Not a classic performance on a very bumpy pitch, but disciplined, a clean sheet confidence high, and our closest rivals to come!
Well done boys!!
