Hitchin Hawks U9 v Stevenage Borough U9

Saturday, February 9 2008

For a change a beautiful warm sunny morning greeted the teams and spectators, hopefully a sign of things to come.

The Hawks like the weather started off brightly with Tyler pushing forward down the left wing, a good pass to Tom in the centre allowed Tom to control the ball well; the resulting shot was stopped by the Stevenage keeper and a corner was given to the Hawks. The corner was cleared by Stevenage who then had a dominant period of play with several surges through the Hawks midfield however the Hawks defence stopped them having any chances on goal. The first goal came in the 4th minute as the Hawks pushed forward and it was Ben who calmly slotted the ball past the keeper to make it [1-0].

Tom had several runs through the Stevenage midfield playing like a man boy possessed! With the ball seemingly glued to his feet he managed to create several chances, his first was a surging run down the wing resulting in a cross that was saved by the keeper. His second chance resulted in a chip shot to try and beat the keeper that was brilliantly saved.

Again Stevenage had several attacks with the Hawks defence clearing the ball each time, both Ryan and Ollie doing a sterling job at the back. Ben had a number of runs down the left wing at one stage beating two defenders to deliver a perfect cross to Tyler whose shot forced another great save from the Stevenage keeper.

As the first half came to a close, a huge goal kick from Ollie was perfectly placed to find Tyler on the left wing deep in the Stevenage half, with just the keeper to beat he tapped it straight into the corner of the goal to make it [2-0].
A quick counter attack from the re-start forced the first save of the match from Ali.

The second half started much as the first had finished with both teams playing football. The first period saw a lot of midfield play with neither team making headway until the Hawks managed to force a corner. Tyler’s kick from the corner went straight to Ben in the box who’s power shot into the goal would probably have taken the keeper with it had he got a hand to it [3-0].

Soon after another attacking move by the Hawks resulted in Ben getting another shot which went just wide of the right post. Another Tyler corner was rebounded back to him giving him chance to place a cross into Tom whose shot was just wide of the right post. Ben made another strong run through the midfield and played a beautiful through pass to Tom who just had the keeper to beat. Unfortunately the keeper was up to the job and ran out from his line forcing Tom’s shot wide of the right post.

The Hawks kept up the pressure in the closing minutes of the game, a pinpoint pass from Ollie to Tom gave Tom another chance but is shot was just over the bar. The final shot of the game fell to George whose shot went just wide of the right post.

An excellent performance from the whole team, Tyler’s support play especially stood out this week, providing many quality balls to the other players. If only we could have moved the Stevenage goal a few feet to the right, we could have scored another 4 or 5 goals!

Hawks: Alistair Moatt; Ryan Cafferkey; Oliver Garner; George Fitter; Tyler Gray; Ben Wilmot; Tom Pickett; Zac Laycock.

Result: Hawks 3 – Stevenage Borough 0
