Two games at a sunny Pixmore produced contrasting performances and results for Hitchin against a skilful Letchworth team.
The first game saw an uncharacteristically flat and lacklustre performance from the boys and the margin of defeat would have been much greater without an outstanding performance from goalkeeper, Kane.
The team were second to every loose ball and struggled to keep possession. After an even start, Hitchin took the lead when Sam Hartnack continued his recent good goal-scoring form by netting with a right-foot shot from the edge of the area. Letchworth then took over and only a series of great saves from Kane and some desperate last-ditch defending from Joel kept Hitchin in front until the Eagles equalised just before half time.
The second-half was one-sided. William, Sam and James were busy in midfield but Hitchin struggled to clear their lines and conceded two further goals. Kane was again excellent and bounced back well from an unfortunate second goal to make a brilliant save from a fierce shot from six yards out when Letchworth looked certain to make it four.
Result: Letchworth 3 Hitchin 1
Fired up from a team talk by coach Iain, Hitchin played much better in Game 2. They were sharper, more committed in the tackle and kept their shape and positions to claim a deserved win.
Joel replaced Kane in goal and was a safe pair of hands throughout and was shielded by solid performances from Stephen and Patrick. Jonathan, Joshua, Kane and Daniel were full of running in the first half and Hitchin were unlucky not to be in front at the break. Sam Hartnack came on in the second half and Hitchin continued to edge the game.
Joshua and Daniel had good chances to score before the breakthrough came mid-way through the half. A melee in the Eagles penalty area led to a handball and Sam made no mistake with a confident finish from the spot. The boys hung on to win and should be congratulated for bouncing back and raising their game.
Result: Letchworth 0 Hitchin 1
