After a long summer break and a slight change in squad – the opening match of the season saw Hitchin welcome Sawbridgeworth.
From the kickoff, the Hawks pressured forward and gained an early corner. This was followed by a lovely pass back to Ben from Tyler, allowing Ben to avoid one player and then shoot into the net to take the lead (1-0).
Sawbridgeworth came back into it and equalized through a long shot that evaded Ryan. This end to end battle carried on for the first half with both teams evenly matched but then a shot from the Sawbridgeworth forward wasn’t able to be held by Ryan and it spun up from his body and agonizingly into the net. (1-2) This was how it finished at half-time and hopes were high for the second period.
Indeed Hitchin started well and good play saw them force some corners. Unfortunately, they weren't able to convert these and then the inevitable happened and Sawbridgeworth scored. (1-3) Juan-Andres had a good long shot on target and Ben carried on running, but time ran out. The last kick of the game saw Sawbridgeworth score another to make the score 1-4, which was a little harsh bearing in mind the amount of play the Hawks had enjoyed.
In the second match, the Harriers showed great commitment from the outset with Zac in particular not allowing the opposition any time on the ball.
However in spite of this, Sawbridgeworth probably had the edge in first 5 minutes and Ali had to get down well to make a vital save. This seemed to galvanise the team and slowly Hitchin exerted the upper hand, helped by solid defending from Danny & Ollie and some crunching tackles in midfield from Alfie. A bustling run from Joe ended in a powerful shot from Zac that just went over the bar.
As the Harriers became more dominant, Daniel’s runs down the right wing opened up the game further and when he finally sneaked the ball inside the post after another great run it was no more than he deserved. (1-0) A good run into space by Matthew almost saw the lead extended whilst a minor scare in the Harriers penalty area showed that the team could not sit back and relax. However when the final whistle went the Harriers were worthy winners of a great opening match.
