Six weeks can be a long time in football, even at youth level. And that was in evidence in this game against the league leaders.
Since Hitchin last played, the team has lost its manager, captain and leading scorer to pastures new. These are not excuses but a reality and it is now normal for there to be a period of re-adjustment in terms of coaching, team shape and ambition.
The boys will not come up against sides the quality of league leaders Broadhall Youth every week, but at the same time the Royston Crow Division One is highly competitive throughout. There are no easy games.
Competitiveness and belief must be regained for the rest of the season, after a poor showing in this match.
Hitchin had a couple of half chances before Broadhall began to dominate, but heads dipped worryingly after the visitors took the lead through a fine looping shot from outside the box.
A goal just before half-time after a fine initial save from keeper Luke McCabe was cruel and things got worse in the second half as a third and then a fourth hit the home net.

It's probably best to forget this game as quickly as possible and hope that the settle-down period starts soon.
In a nutshell, the boys have to ensure that they get on with it, enjoy their football and keep fighting for each other.
