Hitchin Town were drawn at home for our 3rd league meeting of the season against the new boys to the league Brookend Colts.
Both teams are top of Division 1 in the Chiltern Youth league and both teams needed a win to keep up the pressure for the top spot. After such a disappointing loss on Friday and a thrashing from Brookend on our previous meeting, Hitchin knew exactly what was needed. Brookend are a great footballing side who play fair, so us spectators knew we were in for a treat.
The weather was always going to be a massive factor in this game, being 82 degrees and a 2.30pm kick off. Both teams started off well and the midfield of Danny Blanchard, Kyle Ronald, Jordan Armstrong and Michael Evans fought and won most balls in midfield enabling them to feed the ball through to the forwards of Liam Toomey and Bryn Reynolds.
It only took 10 minutes for Hitchin to show what they are made of when a through ball to Liam saw him smash the ball into the back of the net 1-0. What a great start.
The defence of Josh Cook, Arron Goldsmith, Matt Morley and Josh Millett did well and James Holland (GK)took control of his area well. Unfortunately after a superb block, Josh Millett was to leave the field of play.
Hitchin kept up the pressure and just before half time Liam bagged his second goal of the game powering through the visitors defence. 2-0 Half time.
Boths teams seemed to struggle with the intense heat but what was to follow shook Hitchin to the core. With the whistle starting the second half, it could have only been 1 minute before Brookend smashed the ball into the back of our net. 2-1. Brookend meant business!
Hitchin seemed to be on the back foot for the next 10 minutes whilst Brookend made themselves known. They fought hard for eveything and won most balls in midfield. With so many end of season injuries and the heat, Hitchin seemed to drop their heads which saw Brookend take their chance to bring the game level. 2-2
The boys did their very best, but Brookend just kept coming, they were indeed the better side second half and for all their efforts they were rewarded with a winning goal to bring the final score to 3-2.
No words can actaully express the boys, spectators and managers disappointment, this was a must win game for both teams in order to win the league, but Brookend fought to the very end and in extremely difficult circumstances took the 3 points.
So disappointing for everyone concerned, but it has to be said, very refreshing to play a team who not only play great football but who bring along great supporters. It was a really exciting game which kept both teams on their toes.
With only 1 game left to play, we are now in a position to almost decide who takes top spot!!
Well done boys we know you all played your hearts out :-)
