Luton Borough Dragons 0 Hitchin Town Reds 2

Saturday, November 4 2006

A gritty performance from Hitchins under-10s saw them beat top of the table Luton and end the home teams 100 per cent record.

Luton had previously played three and won three, scoring 13 goals along the way. But Hitchin managed to keep their own run going – two wins out of two, with no goals conceded.

Up against the kind of physical approach that must be matched before flowing football can emerge, the Hitchin lads were determined and brave.

Luton pressed downhill throughout the first half, with some well worked set-pieces causing problems. Hitchin were limited to breakaways and Luke was also called on for saves from a couple of long shots - his solid handling being crucial.

As the first half wore on, Hitchin needed to keep the score level until half-time. Luton could have scored through a free header from a corner, then Luke made a brilliant double save.

Luton were tough opposition.... but Hitchin came through

In the second half, the slope allowed Hitchin to get back to their passing game when attacking, but no one could relax – every tackle was important. Paddy, Alfie, Ollie, Jake and Liam crunched into challenges over and over, with even the forwards Christian, Cameron and Ryan getting stuck in.

Hitchin attacked more frequently, then from a cross into the box Cameron showed great technique to swivel for a scissor kick that beat the keeper after deflecting off a Luton defender.

There was plenty of work to be done yet, as Luton pushed for the equaliser, but Hitchin had endurance and no shortage of skill. The counter attacks were increasingly incisive and a brilliantly weighted through ball from Cameron allowed Liam to touch in just ahead of the keeper. Lead doubled. Two nil.

A thrilling last five minutes saw a fine save from Liam that would have wrapped things up, but there was also another important stop from man-of-the-match Luke in the Hitchin goal.

Fantastic result, against a good side. This could be a very important win come the end of the season.
