The game started strongly for both Hurricanes and Barton with end-to-end football.
Alfie, Josh and Lee worked hard to establish a foothold in midfield as Barton continued to play accurate long balls to their striker. Simmy and Jakob were stretched on more than one occasion but worked as a team to defend strongly. Matt in goal after a weeks rest, had to make many saves in the first 6 mins, but eventually Barton split the defence with a well-placed ball and plenty of back up from midfield. 1-0 Barton.
Hurricanes started from the kick off with a long ball from Lee, which found Adam up front. Adam made a great turn and laid the ball off for Josh who tucked away the equaliser after 8 mins. 1-1. Barton came back with sustained pressure, which finally resulted in a corner. After goalmouth scrabble and some inaccurate marking, Barton stuck one in. 2-1 Barton. The rest of the half was fought mainly in Hurricanes half with both teams playing some excellent football. Finally, just before half time Barton scored again after a sliced clearance from Hitchin defence. 3-1 Barton. Well-held Hitchin.
After the start of the second half it seemed that the pressure from Barton was to continue. Michael and Jakob paired well in defence, Jack up front with his usual strong stance and diagonal runs and Adam moved to right mid, all tried hard to move the ball around. But breaks by Barton saw 2 quick goals take the score line to 5-1 Barton.
After some tactical changes Hurricanes start to hold their ground, picking their chances to move forward with some outstanding success…. Chances by Alfie after some great build up play from Simmy and Adam. More pressure finally wins a corner, which is initially cleared by Barton but falls for Adam only for the Barton Keeper to make a great save. After the final round of subs from both sides, a break by Hurricanes sees a pass from Adam fall for Josh who tucks it away to make it 5-2 Barton.
All said, Hurricanes played very well as a team against a well-organised Barton and the score line would have been greater if it had not been for the great defensive display by our MOTM, Jakob.
Final score Barton Rovers 5, Hurricanes 2.
