Hitchin v St Neots

Sunday, January 21 2007

Our first game of the New Year, and what a start. Unfortunately the game didn't play as good as it sounds.  It was windswept to say the least, the ball travelled in two directions, forward and sideways thanks to those strong gusts.

A dodgy Hitchin parent Lines person made a fundemental mistake.  I had a bad day, OK!  "I shall keep up with the play next time."

Unfortuantely, the lateness of my arrival produced a conflict between Players, Parents and the Referee.  I came clean.  "I didn't see it." Between all this mayhem St Neots played to the whistle and scored a goal  The fact that Hitchin had placed the ball on the 5 yard line for a goal kick didn't inspire the Ref to whistle for Hand ball.  I live (still) and learn.  Sorry boys.

The first half was to be St Neots advantage but they didn't use the wind and they struggled to play a half decent game.  The second half was a little different, Hitchin utilised this asset and pushed the ball forward, with accuracy, from the back.  The pressure was on St Neots to keep us out.

It was scrappy but very windy.  Hitchin were awarded a corner and Ollie swung a beauty in, but no one took advantage, so it ended up in the back of the net as the wind swerved the ball over everyones head and into the far corner.  Relieved, we had equalised. That's how the game ended up to until the very last minutes of the match.  When this time, I believe from a throw in, the ball was scrammbled in to the net by Dale, with much relief from me.

Result:  Hitchin 2 St Neots 1.
