Hurricanes hushed the Lions roar with a 2 - 1 victory today at a wind swept Stockwood Park that made ball control almost impossible.
Hitchin were certainly the more dominant team and pressured right from the outset earning a corner within seconds, the first of no less that 18 that they would have in this game! However, the very wide pitch coupled with the terrible strong cross winds made these set pieces difficult to say the least and neither of the two goals came as a result of them.
The first goal though did come early after a high ball in from Ruman found Lee who turned the keeper and struck home from close range to celebrate his full return from injury. 1 - 0.
With a goal so early on in the first half we all thought that it may be the first of many but although Alfie, who had a brilliant game, put two just over the bar and Jack, who was covering in defence today, had a crack from way out that was well saved and also another after a good run went wide, Lee's opener proved to be the only one before the break. Lions threatened only once, from their only corner at this point which gave Matt no trouble with the save.
The second half started much like the first with most of the play by the Hurricanes and midway through Harkeret flicked a ball into Alfie who placed the ball well into the bottom corner of the net for a very well deserved goal. 2 - 0.
Simmy shared duties in midfield and defence today and Ryhs who had possibly his best game so far in defence got a chance up front towards the end and came close to his first goal with a lovely shot that was put behind by the keeper. Harkeret also went close with a nice shot scraping the crossbar and another coming of the upright.
Despite all the Hurricanes pressure, Lions managed to pull one back late on during a rare attack leading to a powerful shot that although Matt tried desperately to deflect over, just didn't deflect quite high enough. 2 - 1.
Although conditions were far from ideal, the lads should have at least doubled their goal count today considering the amount of chances from the numerous corners, but then it wasn't the best performance of the season to be honest but a deserved win none the less.
