Following the postponement of the last 3 weeks due to illness this was going to be a massive test for the boys against a top 2 side and in true style they returned to Hitchin Victorious!
After an early rise, long journey and a good warm up the boys took to the field in a determined manner. They started very well with solid defence, determined midfield and willing runners up front they took the game to a good passing team in Bishops.
Harry ever improving in goal with the ever increasing reliable defensive trio of ‘Berkley’, Sam & Tom ‘the cap’ never looked in danger of conceding until we were caught against the run of play and H just failed to keep out a good shot from the Blues and the score was 0-1.
Back to the kick off and the boys new they had to create more and take there chances when offered. With James holding the centre of midfield ably assisted by Mat & Billy they started to feed the wing backs Ben & Ryan who was having a terrific game down the left and we got the opposition firmly on the back foot. It was now that Olly & ‘Flash’ were starting to impose themselves up front and it came as no surprise when ‘Flash’ jinked passed the last defender to send a thunderous shot passed the keeper and send the boys in 1-1 at half time.
At half time the boys new they had been the better of the two teams but needed to turn their dominance into goals. Dale had come on and proved to be a good outlet upfront with Olly dropping back into midfield and getting more involved.
Both sides continued to contribute to a lovely game of football played in a good spirit which made it easy for the newly qualified referee. But with the pressure mounting on the Bishops Stortford goal and us having missed some easy chances Hitchin finally got into the lead. From Berkley’s long throw into the box James turned on a sixpence (that’s old money speak to you boys) and tucked his left foot shot in between the near post and despairing dive of the Bishops keeper.
Given all the circumstances of recent illness, early start, difficult conditions & top opposition, this was arguably one of the best all round performances the boys have ever produced.
Well done to you all and congratulations to Dale for his MOM performance.
Final Score: Bishops Stortford 1 - 2 Hitchin
